Journey Joined Onstage by Carlos Santana and Gregg Rolie

A mini-Santana reunion took place last night (Aug. 28) when Carlos Santana and Gregg Rolie sat in with Journey. The concert took place at the Pearl Theater at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Rolie was the founding keyboardist and singer in Santana, appearing on their 1969 debut album, providing lead vocals to the classics ‘Black Magic Woman’ and ‘Evil Ways.’ Two years later, Neal Schon joined the group, with both of them departing after 1972′s ‘Caravanserai’ to form the group that would eventually become Journey.

Back in February, we learned that Santana and Schon were looking to reunite the original Santana lineup, although Rolie’s involvement was not definite. “It will be like ‘Santana IV’ because we stopped at ‘Santana III,’” Santana said of the project, which is expected to be out in 2014.

Santana is still in the midst of the two-year residency at the House of Blues at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Vegas that he began in 2012. The next series of shows in his ’An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live – Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow,’ program begins Sept. 11 and will run through Nov. 17.

Mick Jagger to Produce Upcoming James Brown Biopic

The Rolling Stones may be taking a break from touring right now, but that doesn’t mean Mick Jagger is slowing down!

The iconic rocker has announced that he will be producing a new film that’s based on the life of the legendary James Brown.

According to an official press release on MickJagger.com, the singer’s production company, Jagged Films, along with Imagine Entertainment and Brian Grazer will be handling the untitled-biopic, with Tate Taylor (The Help) on board to direct and actor Chadwick Boseman (“Jackie Robinson” in 42) portraying Brown.

“It’s a great honour to be involved with a project as rich as the story of the legendary James Brown,” stated Mick Jagger on his official website. “He was a mesmerizing performer with a fascinating life.”

Tommie Rae Brown, wife of the late singer, added, “I am deeply honoured that Mick Jagger and Brian Grazer, two of my husband James Brown’s favourite people, have entered into a partnership to bring his inspirational story to the big screen.”

Mick Jagger’s website offers up the following description of the film:

“The unforgettable story of James Brown – Soul Brother Number One, Mr. Dynamite, The Hardest Working Man in Show Business – A man possessed with unstoppable drive and boundless originality. Musical genius, business visionary, political icon. Across six decades and countless genres (many of which he invented), the story charts a young boy’s incredible rise from extreme poverty and violence to become the most influential black artist in history.”

Additionally, rumor has it that Jagger, who’s appeared in several films throughout his long career, will also make an appearance in the movie.

Rolling Stones Pinball Sells for $3,750

It took just one bid in a recent eBay auction to secure a barely used rock collectible, when a fan dropped $3,750 on a Rolling Stones pinball machine. The 2011 game, featuring the pared-down current four-piece edition of the band, includes a ramp styled after the Stones’ famous tongue logo.

In the game, players collect signature albums, advancing through four decades of rock history. Stern, the manufacturer, says other features include a “moving Mick [Jagger] target,” and that the pinball machine “plays 13 original Rolling Stones songs.” It listed new for $5,700.

The seller said he’d owned the Stern pinball machine for just five months and was being forced to give it up because of health problems. The Rolling Stones had earlier been featured on a Bally-manufactured machine, produced in 1980. Former bassist Bill Wyman appears on that one.

Paul McCartney to Read Shakespeare With a Bunch of Other Stars

For more than two decades, the folks at Simply Shakespeare have convened once a year to offer “a hilarious and entertaining evening of impromptu Shakespeare and song.” This year, they’re adding a former Beatle to the mix.

ABC News Radio reports that the 23rd-annual Simply Shakespeare benefit event — scheduled for Sept. 25 at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, Calif. — will feature a reading of ‘The Two Gentlemen of Verona’ starring a cast that includes William Shatner, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and Paul McCartney.

The event, which will mark one of McCartney’s first forays into acting since his starring turn in the 1984 movie ‘Give My Regards to Broad Street,’ is a natural fit for the lifelong Shakespeare fan. In the McCartney biography ‘Many Years From Now,’ he talks about the many afternoons he spent by himself in the cheap seats of the local playhouse because he couldn’t get anyone to go with him.

Later, McCartney found fellow aficionados in the Beatles, who spoofed ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ (which you can watch above) and incorporated a few lines of ‘King Lear’ into ‘I Am the Walrus.’ In more recent years, the band’s music has been used to form the basis for a hybrid tribute act, called ‘A Bard Day’s Night,’ which envisions the Fab Four going back in time and meeting Shakespeare.

Tickets for this year’s Simply Shakespeare event, which will feature additional cast members yet to be announced, cost $1,500, with proceeds going to benefit “arts based veterans employment and youth employment programs for inner-city youth and arts education in local schools.”

Happy Birthday Mark Knopfler!

Happy Birthday to former Dire Straits guitarist and leader Mark Knopfler, who celebrates his 64th birthday today! (August 12th)

Knopfler formed Dire Straits in 1977 with his brother David Knopfler, bassist John Illsey, and drummer Pick Withers.

They recorded their self-titled debut album after appearing as the opening act for Talking Heads’ during their 1978 European tour.

Last year, Knopfler served as the opening act on Bob Dylan’s tour. The pair first worked together during Dylan’s sessions for 1979′s Slow Train Coming, with Knopfler going on to play on and co-produce Dylan’s 1983 album, Infidels.

Dire Straits 1978 breakthrough hit, “Sultans Of Swing,” established Knopfler as a songwriter-guitarist in the vein of both Bob Dylan and Albert King. Knopfler was a major force throughout the 1980′s writing such Dire Straits classics as “Skateaway,” “Romeo And Juliet,” “Solid Rock,” “Twisting By The Pool,” as well as “So Far Away,” “Money For Nothing,” and “Walk Of Life” from the multi-platinum 1985 Brothers In Arms album.

After Dire Straits disbanded in 1995, Knopfler went on to record and produce seven solo albums, and, as during his previous tenure, produced many hit songs. He has composed and produced film scores for eight films, including Local Hero (1983)
Knopfler has recorded and performed with many prominent musicians, including Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Bryan Ferry, Emmylou Harris, Jools Holland, Van Morrison, Steely Dan, Sting, and James Taylor, sometimes working as a session musician. He has produced albums for Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, and Randy Newman.
Knopfler and Dire Straits have sold in excess of 120 million albums to date.

John Fogerty Music Video "Almost Saturday Night"

For his latest music video, John Fogerty asked fans to submit photos that showed what it meant to them for it to be “Almost Saturday Night;” the name of his latest single that features country crooner Keith Urban.

Well, submit fans did, and now the favorite photos can been seen as a montage in the music video, along with studio footage of Fogerty and Urban performing the song.

“Almost Saturday Night,” originally from Fogerty’s 1975 self-titled solo album, was reworked as a part of the compilation Wrote a Song for Everyone, which dropped in May. The LP is made up of covers of Creedence Clearwater Revival classics and John’s solo work, and also features two original songs.

Other artists appearing on the album include rockers such as the Foo Fighters, Bob Seger, Kid Rock and Tom Morello, as well as country artists like Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson and the Zac Brown Band.

Check out the music video for “Almost Saturday Night” below.

AC/DC to Release Special Limited-Edition Wine Next Month

AC/DC wine is Back in Black!

Following their successful jump into the vino industry in 2011, rock veterans AC/DC are revealing a limited edition wine called, ‘AC/DC Platinum.’ According to The Shout, the collectable item is showcased in a black-sleek gift box and a bottle made of Savor Glass from France displayed with the band’s logo.

And it’s not just the packaging that makes this bottle a desirable one! The wine, which is a 2010 premium Barossa Valley Shiraz, has been matured for two years in American oak barrels.

The partnership between Warburn Estate and AC/DC previously yielded four other rewarding brands of wine, which include ‘You Shook Me All Night Long Moscato,’ ‘Highway to Hell Cabernet Sauvignon,’ ‘Hells Bells Sauvignon Blanc’ and ‘Back in Black Shiraz.’

‘AC/DC Platinum’ will be available for pre-order through Warburn Estate and is expected to be released in September. Don’t miss out on this rare memorabilia because we have a feeling that this one will sell fast!
