‘FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK’, DE LOS POGUES, LA CANCION MÁS NAVIDEÑA EN UK

Los británicos contabilizan hasta lo que ponen. Y el resultado no puede ser más sorprendente. El tema de los Pogues, ‘Fairytale of New York’, compuesto y cantado por Shane Mc Gowan, con la desaparecida Kirsty MacColl y producida por el que era su marido en ese tiempo, Steve Lillywhite es el tema navideño que más gusta y ponen los ingleses. Lo inaudito es que lo prefieren por encima del ‘Do they know it´s Christmas’, que siempre se creyó que era lo favorito de lo favorito, por esas reunión de estrellas con Spandau Ballet, U2, Ultravox, Genesis, Status Quo, Human League y Duran Duran. Ni tampoco ha podido ‘Last Christmas’ de Wham con los Pogues. Una canción que nació destinada para que la cantara Shane Mc Gowan, con la bajista del grupo Cait O´Riordan, pero como les producía Steve Lyliwhite, su mujer la cantante Kysrty Mc Coll hizo la maqueta y la grabación final. Es curiosa canción de Navidad. Llega a decir en su letra que Sinatra estaba haciendo Swing, y que los coches son tan grandes como los bares, en Nueva York, claro. Muy irlandés. Mc Gowan siempre ha sido que el título de la canción la compusieron antes de conocer la noevala Donleavy, del mismo título de la canción. Uno no soporta la voz desafinada y borrracha de Mc Gowan, pero como contrasta con la de Kyrsty , el tema siempre ha funcionado.
